Edit: my ACP states php 7.3.33 but my cPanel states v 8.2 is being used, now I am confused.

Take a look at How to change the PHP version for a domain in cPanel or WHM – cPanel to see if that provides further information or guidance on how your hosting provider's PHP configuration works.

I always check PHP: Supported Versions as the definite source of which versions are supported.

All my live phpBB boards are running on PHP 8.2 and my testing/staging boards are using PHP 8.3. So far so good with PHP 8.3 and phpBB 3.3.12.
