You could make a group, give it a rank and add them to it (same as if they were an admin for instance).
Thanks, KevC. That's a nice suggestion but it's not something actually built in? I didn't think I'd ever seen it. It's just that there was a bit of a fuss about a member suddenly disappearing without explanation and some people thought it would be nice to know what had happened.It was quite common on the old "lineone" forum but that wasn't phpbb.

looking at a mods profile, it's clearly saying "groups - moderator". So "groups-banned" would do it perfectly! Thank you!
